Another Nightcrawler Film Review

These reviews of various films are simply an exercise to get the students
to put their point of view as clearly and succinctly as possible to paper.
During the semester we looked at a number of films, concentrating
largely on these films from an actors point of view.
Committing their points of view to paper clearly, as an exercise,
is the 1st step in developing their vocabulary for examining and sharing
what does and does not resonate for them as regards script, picture,
and performance.

The films theme is crime. The lead character Lou Bloom (Jake Gyllenhaal) is a former thief who likes to make a living from criminal business.  The film takes place in modern time in Los Angeles. It seems to be a rough world to live in, seeing what the people in the movie do to survive. The daily crime is also quite frightening but it is the reality of today.

I think this movie has a very original screenplay. Often shots are left out which makes the film more interesting and leaves the story to the imagination of the viewers… The actions are quite shocking, also the person Jake Gyllenhaal is portraying is a frightening sociopath. Sociopaths do exist in this world where we are living and it makes you think about how crazy this world really is.

Jake Gyllenhaal did an incredible acting job in this movie. His wide open eyes are a big part of this sociopathic behavior. He really doesn’t care about other people and is basically a complete criminal and killer. His expressions in the movie are brilliant. He really makes believe he is a sociopath.

I think both actors and plot are brilliant. The plot is absolutely thrilling. A plot that makes you think and imagine. So it’s a good balance of both amazing acting performance and story that make this movie an absolute winner.

The cinematography of the film fits very well with this kind of story. Its a crime thriller that shows shocking images. Many shots are unexpected and well done.

CRIME THRILLER- I think is does matter what genre a film is classified in even though a film can be more than one genre. Nowadays people just like things classified to have a more structural life. In this movie the genre is quite clear though. I am not sure in which other genre it could fit.

Overall..brilliant movie with great acting. Jake’s psycho freak star turn is absolutely something that made this movie more special than the rest.
