"Cold War" Movie Review By Film School HK

Last week I finally went to watch the Cantonese police film “Cold War” and found that this is one of the best movies I have seen in recent months. The local community has been raving about this film non-stop and I now understand why.

Knowing this movie was written and directed by up and coming Hong Kong directors Sunny Luk and Longman Leung, I was unsure what to expect, but was very pleasantly surprised. The movie contained many attractive features – particularly the Hollywood-styled cinematography – and those we would typically expect from the crime/gangster film genre (car races, explosions and gun play).

Also the film starred my favorite actor, Tony Leung, as a lead role – M.B. Lee. Throughout the feature film, there was a very obvious tension between different parties, such as the ICAC and Hong Kong police force. The film explored this tension in a very interesting way, with lots of twists and turns, and this definitely added to the enjoyable experience. The cliffhanger at the end was a bit of a letdown, but promised the hope of a surely excellent sequel in the near future!
