"DJANGO UNCHAINED" MOVIE REVIEW

Django Unchained‘ is the most recent addition to cult writer-director Tarantino‘s repertoire. Seamlessly bringing together yet another all-star cast in his first take on the ‘spaghetti-western’ genre Tarantino has created a thought-provoking, thoroughly entertaining feature.

The story follows Django (played by Jamie Foxx) – a freed slave, on his adventures with Dentist turned Bounty Hunter Dr. King Schultz (Christoph Waltz). After a prosperous season Bounty hunting together, the pair eventually wind-up in Candieland, property of the infamous Monsieur Calvin Candie in search of Broomhilda Django’s wife.

If asked I would not be able to pick-out a star performance from the cast, but to mention a few, DiCaprio’s first outing as a villain was outstanding, Waltz added just the right amount of whit and charm, and Jackson’s performance was entrancing and provocative.

No doubt about it this release is controversial, particularly considering the recent events involving gun-crime in the States – I must admit I did wonder how necessary the complete brutality of the massacre scene was, and whether a little more sensitivity should have been considered. However, one thing I am fairly certain of is that the movie provided a necessary reminder of the horrors of slavery and perhaps more importantly to a modern audience those of racial segregation and mal-treatment.

This film gets a definite ‘thumbs-up’ from me. Cover your eyes where you need to, but make sure you see the rest of it!
