EXPERIENCES AS AN INTERN AT IAFT BY NATALIE
Hi! My name is Natalie from Renaissance College (RCHK) and I am currently in Year 11. As part of our ‘World of Work’ program, every student from our year must take part in work experience and luckily, IAFT had accepted me for being an intern for a week. Having an initial interest in film, and especially screenwriting, IAFT was the ideal place for me to gain some knowledge about what goes on “behind the scenes” during filmmaking and to see the different components that goes into making a company.
Over the course of the week, I expected to be placed into a single department and mostly do office work, however, I have gained so many new experiences about the aspects of a school and experienced activities that are exclusive to IAFT. From thinking of marketing ideas to becoming a temporary boom mic operator, the range of work I was exposed to was definitely broad.
Among the many aspects of work I had experienced, the most memorable experience at IAFT would be my involvement in each department of the school. I was introduced to how to set up cameras and tripods used in the filmmaking industry and I was involved in the making of a student film by operating the boom mic. I was also lucky enough to sit in on a screenwriting class. Working at the marketing and the admissions department was another aspect of a school that I had never experienced before. I was quickly introduced the basics of advertising, social media, speaking confidently on the phone and other daily tasks that must be completed. Along with other odd jobs and running some errands, this summarised what I did during work experience.
Overall, the work environment was welcoming, thanks to the many friendly people that guided me throughout the week. I am grateful for this opportunity and would like to thank the ‘colleagues’ that I have made; for being supportive and easy to talk to throughout my visit.
