HKTDC EDUCATION & CAREERS EXPO 2013

This past weekend, our team at IAFT participated in the Education and Careers Expo organized by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre in Wan Chai. This was the second year that we joined the event and this year we reached out to more local students in Hong Kong, letting them know more about the international standard filmmaking and acting courses that we are now providing on their very own doorstep!

I was a little surprised at the number of people who were at the fair, and just how many were interested in our programs! We talked with lots of visitors from a wide range of industries – several were students of local institutes looking to top-up with a more hands-on, professional program. However, I also spoke to numerous people who were employed full-time – professionals such as HR Managers, Government Officials and University Lecturers – who want to leave their jobs, or at least to study as well as work, in order to follow their passions in either filmmaking or acting. This has become a big trend in recent times, working in the admissions team at IAFT I get to meet many prospective students, and I often talk to people who share with me their dreams of learning how to write, shoot, direct and edit their own character driven drama, comedy or horror films, or who have equally vivid dreams of becoming a professional actor. This is one of the main reasons why we are now offering classes outside of regular working hours – for these passionate, professional students.

I have been working in the educational sector for a quite a while now, and I have realized what a blessing it is to study here in HK – students have the chance to study a multitude of programs, without political influence or censorship. We are still able to speak freely, petition, and even criticize our governing bodies, and this is something I believe we should not take fore granted as in many other Asian countries it is not so easy. What I love about this creative industry is that students can take even more advantage of this! They have the freedom to write, shoot, direct, and perform whatever they want to – to fully take advantage of this wonderful, vibrant city!
