INVITATION TO THE 7TH ASIAN FILM AWARDS

I was very excited when I heard that IAFT HK had been exclusively invited to take part in The 7th Asian Film Awards (AFA) held at the Wan Chai Convention Centre. AFA is organized by The Hong Kong International Film Festival Society (HKIFFS) to recognize outstanding work and to promote the rich legacy of Asian film in both the region and overseas. It is the only platform in the world that brings together the best cinematic talents of Asia, drawing film fans and professionals from all across the globe. It sure was a fruitful experience for me as I got to walk on the red carpet and show my support to the show. Also, I got to meet and greet many creative and talented people – Directors, Cinematographers, Editors and Actors who were being invited onto the stage to share their experience in the competitive industry.

As to the highlight of the night, it has got to be when the Superstar Michelle Yeoh was being cheered on stage to be presented with the “Excellence in Asian Cinema Award”. A few of my all-time favourite movies of hers include “Yes Madam“, “Royal Warriors“, “Magnificent Warriors“, “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon“, “The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor” and obviously the James Bond film, “Tomorrow Never Dies“. I have always been inspired by Michelle Yeoh, as she is a talented women. With her considerable determination she has managed to break through the barrier that had held back Asian screen talent thus opening the door for Asian films on a global stage.

After attending the event, I fully understand that the most important thing in producing a good movie does not only involve a good story plot or use of expensive equipment; you also need a good cast to help and believe that this will become the next blockbuster movie. The key to succeeding in life is to believe in yourself, hence I hope that when our students start making their class films, they will take each one seriously and believe in themselves and their project. I believe that in future years, I will get to see some of our graduate students as nominees in upcoming Asian Film Awards ceremonies – I better receive an invite!
