'Red'ucation Open House
Last week, our friends at Digital Magic invited us to attend a REDucation open house with the RED Digital Camera team. The event was held at the Hong Kong Design Institute in Tseung Kwan O, and drew in a full auditorium’s worth of filmmakers – current and aspiring. It was a great opportunity for the team to showcase their latest Epic cameras to a Hong Kong crowd. Throughout the evening, they demoed footage on a 4K projector and even setup a few scenes with the audience. What they were able to achieve on the spot was quite remarkable; a testament to how intuitive and efficient the cameras and their editing suites are.
Arthur Wong, DP of “Painted Skin 2” was a special guest of the night and shared his experience using RED cameras in his cinematography process. Percy Fung, of Digital Magic, also took the stage and showed off some of the award-winning Expo work his company created using the cameras. He further advocated how RED is also a powerful multimedia tool.
Seeing is believing, as the presentation wowed the audience with its unprecedented detail and superb frame rate. RED anticipates 4K to be the inevitable standard of picture quality in the near future. It was unquestionably superior to current HD projections, and a good sign of things to come. Our own Cinematography Mentors are looking forward to incorporating 4K technology into our Filmmaking curriculum. Fingers crossed that this will happen soon!
