"THE PLACE BEYOND THE PINES" MOVIE REVIEW
I’d never heard of this movie when I watched it almost half a year ago. For what I believe was a limited-release, with under-marketed, the cast was surprising. Ryan Gosling, Bradley Cooper, Ray Liotta, and Eva Mendes along with several others, whom all turned in tremendous performances. 140 minutes later, I realized this was extremely well written, and very enjoyable to watch.
The Place Beyond the Pines is extremely difficult to explain, since it’s really three interconnected stories, which take place over a long period of time.
The story begins with a motorcycle stunt rider (Gosling) whom recognizes that the only way he can provide for his girlfriend (Mendes) and their newborn child is to rob banks. A rookie cop (Cooper), with driven motivation comes into contact with the stunt driver. The police department is also governed by detective, whom is corrupt, and of course happens to be Ray Liotta (No Surprise).
Director Derek Cianfrance (Blue Valentine) film is an intense crime/drama chronicling the adverse effects that derives from the very first day Gosling and Cooper first meet. It’s a concentrated character study of three of the actors. The Place Beyond the Pines did what most CGI-packed movie’s couldn’t; it told a beautifully written tension-filled story, let alone with stunning cinematography. The movie however, does command a lot of attention.
Highly recommended, in fact, you’ll barely feel the 140 minutes and wish it were longer!
