Several weeks back, we had film producer Sean Akers come by the film school to give a talk on crowdfunding.  With an extremely well laid-out power-point presentation and lecture, Sean lent his expertise on how to successfully manage a financing campaign on crowdfunding sites like Kickstarter and Indiegogo.

Finding the money for your project is always one of the biggest hurdles of making a film (be it a short, feature or web-series) – okay, maybe it’s THE biggest hurdle.  But as sites like Kickstarter become more and more popular, filmmakers are flocking to it to get their projects funded.  Whether you need $500, $5,000 or even $50,000 – it’s not impossible to get the money for your project this way.

During his talk, Sean pointed out that there’s no secret to having the right project to attract investors.  There are definitely key things you want to look for, but at the end of the day there are no guarantees your idea will fly.  But where you can insure success is how you actually present your idea, and the level of organization you prepare before posting your campaign on Kickstarter.  There are multiple steps that – if done properly – can tip the scales in your favor and help you meet your financing goals.
