Well, Filmart is just around the corner (next Monday through Thursday).  Filmart is the event where everyone from producers looking to sell, distributors looking to buy, Asian, European and American film councils looking to recruit projects to film with them, equipment manufacturers showing off their flashiest wares, trade journos, and marketing execs all mix together to make deals during one of Asia’s largest film markets.
Recently, the Asia Film Awards and the Hong Kong International Film Festival have joined in the fun by scheduling their respective events to allow all three to coincide, taking advantage of stars and industry people being in town for at least one of the three goings-on, enhancing them all.
In years past, I have attended Filmart to pitch projects,  catch screenings of films not yet released, drop in on financing seminars, play with new filmmaking toys and catch up with old and new friends.  This year I will be back again, pitching a television series about music, called “Audiophobia.”  The market provides a great place to observe trends in order to stay ahead of them while also deepening your understanding of how marketing and distribution works.  Even as someone who is not necessarily interested in them, they are aspects of creating films that are essential for any director or screenwriter to know.  I strongly encourage anyone who is unfamiliar with the business side to come to the HKCEC to walk around and listen in on some conversations or at least geek out on the newest gear.
