Whiplash – Film Review
WHAT DO YOU THINK THIS STORY WAS REALLY ABOUT FOR THE PRIMARY CHARACTERS?
For the drummer, it was mainly about making his dream come true and make his family proud. The teacher wanted to push his students so they could achieve more than they would ever expect from themselves.
WHAT DID YOU THINK ABOUT HOW THE STORY WAS TOLD? WAS IT ORIGINAL? WAS IT INTELLIGENT? DID THIS STORY TAKE YOU ANYWHERE INTELLECTUALLY OR EMOTION-ALLY..DID IT MAKE YOU THINK..DID IT MAKE YOU FEEL/HOW DID IT MAKE YOU FEEL? !
I think that the story was very original. Not like a standard way of telling a story. Not sure how to explain this but it just seemed different. The story meant a lot to me because the drummer is going through the same stuff I do as an actor. You have to work extremely hard to get to where you want to be. You have to fully commit and train as much as you possibly can. Then there is a girl he turns down because it distracts him from his career. This is also what I’m personally going through right now. I don’t necessarily need a relationship, but I’d really like one-well, as long as I can also fully commit to my career. This is very hard to combine. I know that by focusing completely on my dreams, the dream may come eventually. !
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE PERFORMANCES OF THE LEAD ACTORS? PLEASE COMMENT ON THE LEVEL OF ACTING..WAS IT ACCOMPLISHED? WORLD CLASS? NOT VERY GOOD?
I think that both of the lead actors were completely believable. I found the teacher absolutely amazing. He was perfectly sharp and portrayed an absolute “dickhead” teacher. I really felt it-and felt like doing it myself- when the drummer wanted to punch his teacher/band leader. Like getting rid of an annoying bug. !
WOULD YOU SAY THE SUCCESS OF THIS STORY RELIES MORE ON AN AUDIENCE INVESTMENT IN THE PRIMARY CHARACTER’S BEHAVIOR, PSYCHOLOGY, OR MENTALITY, OR, IS IT A FILM THAT RELIES MORE ON A WELL DESIGNED PLOT? OR, IN THIS FILM, IS THE SUCCESS TO DO WITH THE A BALANCE OF BOTH?
Primarily it relies on the character’s behavior, psychology and mentality. I mean, if you look at the story alone, not much happens at all. They just prepare for a few shows and rehearse and that’s pretty much the entire story. They way the characters are involved makes it a really good story, so that’s why the previously mentioned points are so important to this film. !
DO YOU THINK THE LOOK OF THE FILM WORKED IN HARMONY WITH THE KIND OF STORY THAT THE DIRECTOR WAS TRYING TO TELL? DID THE STYLE OF THE PHOTOGRAPHY IN THE FILM MAKE THE ACTORS PERFORMANCES MORE INTERESTING, OR LESS? !
I think it did harmonize. The colors not too bright or distracting. Mostly darker colors as far as I can remember, and this really fit the mood of the characters.
